How to play Star Battle

Place one star in every row, every column and every colour region. Stars can never touch, not even diagonally. That is the whole rule set. Each Solvedle puzzle has exactly one solution and can be solved by logic alone.

Solving techniques

  1. Single candidate. If a row, column or region has only one cell left that could hold a star, the star goes there. Then dot out every cell in its row, column, region and the eight cells around it.
  2. Cells that see a whole unit. If placing a star in a cell would dot out every remaining cell of some other row, column or region, that cell can't hold a star. Dot it. A region that lies entirely inside one row is the classic case: no other cell in that row can have a star.
  3. Confinement. If two regions fit entirely inside the same two rows, those two rows' stars must go in those two regions, so dot every other cell of both rows. The same works for columns, and for three regions in three rows.

Solvedle's easy puzzle needs techniques 1–2, medium adds two-region confinement, and hard needs it several times or with three regions.

FAQ

What is Star Battle?

Star Battle is a grid logic puzzle. You place stars so that every row, every column and every outlined region holds exactly one star, and no two stars touch, not even diagonally. It is also known as Two Not Touch when two stars per row are required.

Is Star Battle the same as the LinkedIn Queens game?

They use the same rules: one piece per row, column and coloured region, with no two pieces touching. Queens is LinkedIn's version of the one-star Star Battle puzzle. Solvedle is independent and not affiliated with LinkedIn.

Do I ever need to guess?

No. Every Solvedle puzzle has exactly one solution, and our solver checks that it can be reached with logical steps only before a puzzle is published.

How is difficulty decided?

By the hardest deduction a human needs. Easy puzzles need only single candidates and cells that would wipe out a whole row, column or region. Medium and hard puzzles need confinement: a group of regions squeezed into the same number of rows or columns.
